The following descriptions are what a third through fourth grader should be able to do:

STANDARD 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. 

(locomotor, non-locomotor, manipulative skills)

 

 

 Demonstrates mature forms in locomotor, and manipulative skills

(ex. Locomotor- run, jump, skip; non-locomotor- bend, stretch, lunge; manipulative- catching, throwing, kicking)

 

 

Demonstrates the ability to adapt and adjust a combination of movement skills in applied settings.

-dribbling with hand and /or foot while preventing an opponent from stealing a ball.

- dribble and pass a ball to a moving receiver.

 

 

Demonstrates the ability to manipulate objects with skills necessary to participate in games and lead-up activities.

- engages in simple games requiring manipulative skills

 

Demonstrate mature forms of selected specialized movement forms.

 -Perform basic dance step (grapevine)

 

STANDARD 2:

Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

(Knowledge of performing skills)

The student is able to recognize movement cues

- transfer of weight when throwing, overhand, follow through, side to target)

The student recognizes and describes critical elements of more complex movement

patterns. (e.g., describes the use of the arms, as well as the legs, in performing the running long jump for maximum distance).

 

Employs the concept of efficient and effective practice to improve skills in

appropriate settings (e.g., repeating the skill of basketball lay-ups in a gym

or playground setting).

Demonstrate of offensive strategies in competition setting.

- Head fake, foot fake, burst of speed, change of direction.

 

STANDARD 3:

Physical Fitness

- Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

Identifies one activity to improve each component of health-related fitness.

Participates in self-assessment for health-related fitness

Participates in self-assessment for health-related fitness and scores slightly below the National Standard Physical Fitness test for all five assessments for their appropriate age group.

Participates in self-assessment for health-related fitness and meets the standards for the 50 percentile in the National Standard Physical Fitness testing for all five assessments for their appropriate age group.

Participates in self-assessment for health-related fitness and meets the standards for the 85 percentile in the National Standard Physical Fitness testing for all five assessments for their appropriate age group.

STANDARD 4

Awareness

- Understands physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/ or social intentions.

 

Students recognize physical activity as a positive opportunity for social development and group interaction.

-List physical activities considered to be fun and explain why.

 

Identifies several moderate to vigorous physical activities that provide personal pleasure (e.g., participates in youth league soccer after school, or

joins in a pick-up game of basketball).

 

Students will describe the physiological and psychological benefits that result from physical activity.

- Identify the importance of physical activity, and the effects on the body.

 

Selects and participates regularly in physical activities for the purpose of improving skill and health (engages in activities that promote cardiovascular fitness).

- Personal journal, progress report.

STANDARD 5

Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in a physical activity setting.

Recognizes and avoids unsafe practices and situations.

 

Demonstrates good sportsmanship and fair play in a variety of settings.

Works cooperatively with teachers and peers to reach a common goal. Handles conflicts that arise with others without confrontation

Exhibits independence and ability to succeed in groups. Accepts and gives constructive feedback to peers and teacher.

 

STANDARD 6

Demonstrates understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings

 

 

 

 Rarely displays positive attitudes toward self and others through physical activity.

 

Sometimes displays positive attitudes toward self and others through physical activity.
